What Training is Required?

Acupuncturists have a minimum of 1900 hours of supervised instruction from an accredited school.  They are required to pass the national board exam from the National Certification Commission of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine(NCCAOM.)  The NCCAOM is the only national organization that validates entry-level competency in the practice of Acupuncture and Oriental medicine (AOM) through professional certification. Acupuncture in Wisconsin

Our state has a organization called the Wisconsin Society of Certified Acupuncturists (WISCA).  Their mission is to “promote excellence in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine throughout the State of Wisconsin.” WISCA’s growth and development advances the profession in the state  by supporting integrative health care in their communities.  This organization strives to make sure Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine can be accessible to anyone in Wisconsin in a safe and effective manner.

Regulations for Acupuncture

Acupuncture licensure/certification is regulated by the state of Wisconsin, which requires strict qualifications of the profession.  In many states medical doctors(MDs) and Chiropractors can take a 100 hour workshop and then practice acupuncture.  Often patients confuse this qualification with a Licensed/Certified Acupuncturist who has studied for years at an accredited Oriental Medicine College.

Diagnosis and Treatment Using Acupuncture

Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine is a complete system of medicine all on its own.  Learning this complex system of diagnosis and treatment takes many years to learn.  Accredited acupuncture schools teach the location, use and safe needling technique of over 400 acupuncture points.  Safety issues and effective needle placement is taught through specialized training and over 600 hours of supervised clinical experience.

To protect yourself, always ask your provider what qualifications they have and what length of time was required for their acupuncture education.  Finally be sure that your acupuncturist is licensed by the state to practice acupuncture.  In order to get the most out of your acupuncture treatments, use these guidelines to help you find the most qualified acupuncturist.  Remember, you deserve the best!
