Happy Spring!

Dear HLA friends,
Happy Spring!
Spring liver season is here! The spring season is connected to the TCM concept of the feisty angry liver.  The cold winter found us with less physical activity and a heavier diet so the liver may be slow or stagnant to get moving. When the liver is overloaded, toxins can build up and lead to a blockage in the Qi and blood flow throughout the body. Acupuncture can help to release this blockage and restore our bodies natural flow.
Stuck liver energy also keeps us from finding healthy sexual connections. If you are in a loving relationship please don’t let this seasonal feeling keep you from moving and benefiting from moving the liver meridian. Please remember, self care isn’t selfish!Spring is the perfect time to bring more self-awareness to your body and the toxins that are ingested on a daily basis. Paying closer attention to your diet and getting rid of processed foods and chemicals can help to detox your liver and diminish acute problems that may have formed.
If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, such as: nausea, stiff muscles, anger, RIB pain, depression…
Then consider doing the following:

  • Eat more greens(chlorophyll is detoxing)
  • Eat fermented foods or take Apple cider vinegar with honey
  • Get outside more.
  • Reduce alcohol and saturated fat intake.
  • Call and make an appointment to see me.

Thank you for seeking healthy options and taking the time to read my letter!  I’m so excited to start hiking and plan to find some mushrooms this spring!
Best regards,
Sarah Atkinson L.Ac.

LIVER FORMULAS:Acupuncture is great for increasing circulation but any muscle movement helps us get up and go out of the rut. My favorite formulas are Xiao Yao San and Yi Guan Jian for liver organ/meridian associated spring patterns. Xiao Yao San is a gentle formula used for people suffering from poor digestion after a long winter or for people who follow a high fat/protein diet with irregular or loose bowels. We also use this formula when patients don’t respond well to probiotics. We have two specifically for joint pain(arthritis) and muscle pain. Yi Guan Jian has an action of soothing the liver, moistening the tendons and supporting kidneys. I use this a lot in spring, especially to manage musculoskeletal pain.
